Yamal collapsed when the final whistle blew. |
In the early hours of April 9th, Barcelona concluded the first leg of their Champions League quarter-finals with a 0-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid, and the image of Lamine Yamal collapsing on the pitch after the match is a haunting detail.
It was a moment that encapsulated the helplessness of a young talent having to carry the entire attack, on a day when Barcelona were without Raphinha and Robert Lewadowski had to leave the field early due to a tactical change.
Yamal was a rare bright spot in the Barcelona lineup, receiving the highest score from Sofascore (8.5) despite the defeat. Yamal touched the ball 73 times, completed 14 dribbles with 8 successful ones, and consistently created chances on the right flank. The 18-year-old's dribbling skills repeatedly disrupted Atletico's defense.
Coach Hansi Flick expressed his sympathy in the post-match press conference: "Of course Lamine is disappointed. Everyone is disappointed. Lamine had a fantastic game from start to finish, both defensively and offensively. He had one-on-one situations, dribbling past 3, 4, even 5 players. As I said yesterday, he's only 18 years old, what he showed was extraordinary."
Yamal created three key passes, including one clear-cut chance. However, Barcelona's attack lacked sharpness in the final touches, rendering all of Yamal's efforts futile.
The match became even more difficult when Barcelona lost Cubarsi to a red card at the end of the first half. Playing with ten men, Yamal had to shoulder almost all the ball-carrying responsibilities.
He made 23 attacking runs, contributing nearly 79 meters of ball distribution, but it was still not enough to break down Atletico's defense.
Yamal did everything he could, but in a disjointed team, all his efforts were in vain.
