At the Google I/O event, the tech giant announced a groundbreaking feature called 'Ask YouTube'. This tool allows users to chat with AI to instantly find and view the video segment containing the most accurate answer.
Google I/O reveals new AI weapon about to 'land' on YouTube.
Instead of typing short keywords and wasting time skipping through lengthy intros or commercials, the Ask YouTube feature takes the video viewing experience to a whole new level. Users can ask complex questions in natural language, just like a normal conversation. Google's AI system will scan millions of videos (including Shorts) to filter out relevant clips, then automatically take viewers to the correct timestamp containing the key answer.

CEO Sundar Pichai asserted that this new technology will make information on video platforms easier to understand and navigate than ever before. Currently, this feature is being rolled out to YouTube Premium users in the US market before being widely available globally.
User convenience, a 'nightmare' for YouTubers?
Despite offering maximum convenience for viewers, Ask YouTube is facing deep concern from the content creator community. Historically, YouTube's distribution algorithm and YouTubers' income have relied heavily on 'watch time' and 'viewer retention'.
If AI only directs users to watch a few dozen seconds containing the information they need before exiting, it can severely reduce advertising revenue for channels. At the same time, this also makes it easy for viewers to miss important context and key points in other segments of the video.
This move by Google is reminiscent of the controversies surrounding the AI Overviews feature on Google Search, which was accused of "stealing" traffic from source websites by automatically generating short answers. As the era of AI generation increasingly penetrates entertainment platforms, the battle for profit between tech corporations and content creators is sure to continue intensely.
