Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said on May 23 that his forecast for the $200 billion central processing unit (CPU) market includes China.
This move shows that Nvidia still sees significant long-term demand in this market, despite the ongoing technology tensions between the US and China.
Earlier this week at the earnings call, Huang attempted to reassure investors that the world's most valuable company could maintain its explosive growth momentum thanks to its vast customer base. He also asserted that new products would help Nvidia surpass the $1 trillion sales target it had projected for its flagship AI chips.
Also at this meeting, Mr. Huang revealed that the new "Vera" line of central processing units would pave the way for the company to enter a new market worth $200 billion. On May 23rd, in an interview with the press upon his arrival in Taipei (Taiwan, China), Mr. Huang stated that the aforementioned optimistic forecast included China.
Central processing units (CPUs) are becoming a focal point as businesses shift towards Artificial Intelligence agents—systems capable of operating independently. This trend has expanded market demand, moving away from focusing solely on graphics processing units (GPUs), which were previously primarily used for training large-scale AI models.
Currently, Nvidia has been granted permission by the US government to sell its H200 series chips, but has yet to receive approval from Chinese authorities, as China is also actively promoting domestic chip suppliers.
Negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing this month have yet to yield an immediate breakthrough that would allow Nvidia to sell its H200 chips to China. Mr. Huang was also on the trip as a member of the US delegation.
Last week, it was reported that the US had approved the purchase of H200, Nvidia's second-most powerful AI chip, by about 10 Chinese companies, but so far no orders have been successfully delivered.
