The đổi mới (renewal) initiated and led by the Communist Party of Viet Nam has entered its 18th year. During this process, the Party has always based itself on Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought, which it has creatively applied to the specific conditions of Viet Nam.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Soviet Union disintegrated and the socialist countries in Eastern Europe collapsed. Socialism was attacked from different directions. Viet Nam fell into a grave socio-economic crisis. The anti-socialist forces were expecting the collapse of the Communist Party of Viet Nam and the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
Yet, the Vietnamese communists and people, who have been well forged, trained and successful in the long history of national construction and defense, stick fast to the ideals and the path chosen while starting the renewal process.
The 6th Congress of. the Party in 1986 was of historic significance. It initiated the cause of đổi mới, in the spirit of looking straight at the truth, correctly appraising the truth, and renovating our way of thinking, organization and work style.
The 7th, 8th and 9th Congresses of the Party continued to intensify the line put forward by the previous Congress so as to lift the country out of the socio-economic crisis. The country is now confidently embarking on national industrialization-modernization.
The achievements recorded in the 18 years of đổi mới prove that the way of thinking, political determination and economic mindset of the Communist Party of Viet Nam have matured, and that the Party is leading the country along the socialist path.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Phu Trong, member of the Politburo, Secretary of the Ha Noi City Party Committee and Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, has written articles to specify the above issues, appraising and summing up the successes and failures of the đổi mới cause. The articles were run on a number of political and theoretical newspapers and reviews during the years of đổi mới.

The articles are structured in two major parts. Part I is entitled "Đổi mới — A Necessity for National Development," and Part II "The Communist Party of Viet Nam - The Initiator and Leader of the National Renewal Cause."
