Vietnam Chronological History

Fossils of Homo erectus have been found in Thẩm Khuyến and Thẩm Hai caves in Lạng Sơn province. These are typical archeological remnants of the prehistoric periods in Vietnam. These fossils, to a great extent, are similar to the fossils of the Neanderthals. They may have lived simultaneously with the Sinanthropus pekinensis, of a later development stage.

Fossils of Homo sapiens of an early stage were found in Thẩm Ồm cave in Nghệ An province and Hùm cave in Yên Bái province.
Fossils of Homo sapiens were found in Kéo Lèng and Làng Tráng archeological sites in Lạng Sơn province.
Lower Paleolithic: The most significant and discussed culture of the Lower Paleolithic Period in Vietnam is the Đọ Mountain Culture in Thiệu Khánh commune, Thanh Hóa province. Hand axes were produced and became a labor tool representative of the Đọ Mountain Culture.
Upper Paleolithic: The Ngườm Culture in Thái Nguyên province, Nậm Tun Culture in Lai Châu province, Bản Phố Culture in Sơn La province and Đồi Thông Culture in Hà Giang province are the most significant and typical for the Upper Paleolithic Period in Vietnam. Upper Paleolithic archeological relics have also been found in Cao Bằng province. By then, humans could produce chopping tools.
