48 hours in Tuyen Quang

VnExpressVnExpress12/01/2024

Visiting Tuyen Quang in winter, tourists will experience the characteristic cold of Northern Vietnam and admire the misty landscape and fluffy clouds.

A 48-hour trip to Tuyen Quang is suitable for travelers departing from Hanoi . Travel is now more convenient with the Phu Tho - Tuyen Quang expressway opening at the end of December 2023. However, for a complete and unhurried experience, travelers should depart from Hanoi in the late afternoon, stay overnight in Tuyen Quang city, before embarking on activities over the next two days.

This experience in Tuyen Quang was written by Mr. Nhat Quang, a tourist from Hanoi, and suggested by Mr. Viet Hung, a representative of a travel company in Hanoi.

Day 1

Morning

Have breakfast in Tuyen Quang city with some of the popular dishes such as pork offal porridge, rice rolls, or pho. Some places to try: Khanh Phuong pork offal porridge, Tuan Viet pork offal, Nguyet Bich An rice rolls, Xuan Lien rice rolls.

Depart for the Na Hang Lake ecological area, located nearly 110 km from the city center. This is a "must-visit" destination in Tuyen Quang. Na Hang is likened to a "fairyland on earth," a "Ha Long Bay in the heart of the mountains," formed by the confluence of the Lo and Gam rivers, surrounded by limestone mountains and primeval forests. From November to January, Na Hang is always shrouded in mist, creating a dreamy and impressive landscape.

"A trip of about 5 hours on the lake is suitable, including meal times," Quang said, noting that the boats operate from 8 am to 5 pm daily.

Mr. Quang also said that when you arrive in Na Hang, you should go straight to the pier and rent a boat. The price is about 1.5 million VND for a boat that can carry about 30 people. From the Na Hang hydroelectric lake tourist pier, the boat travels upstream on the Lo River past Pac Ta Temple - Pac Vang Temple, and the final point is the sacred Buffalo Tying Pillar, also known as Vai Pha. Everyone who takes a boat here makes a wish.

Noon

Catering services are available on the houseboat. Depending on the needs and preferences of the guests, but typically 200,000 VND per person is enough for an all-you-can-eat meal. Popular dishes include buffalo skin salad with bamboo shoots, river fish, river shrimp, free-range chicken, and local pork.

Visitors can also visit Khuoi Nhi Waterfall and Nam Me Waterfall and try the unique foot massage service with fish. The fish here are completely wild, not farmed.

Afternoon

If visitors enjoy immersing themselves in the lives of ethnic minorities, they can choose to rent homestays in stilt houses owned by local people in Na Hang (about 5 km from the lake) or in Lam Binh (about 30 km from the lake). Lam Binh has more homestays than Na Hang and also offers more vibrant cultural activities.

Homestays cost around 400,000 VND for a double room, while stilt houses cost 50,000 to 80,000 VND per person per night. Some homestays in Lam Binh include Quan Van Ha, Anh The, Nam Dip, and Chau Minh Vy. Dinner at the homestay or nearby costs around 200,000 VND per person.

Day 2

Morning and noon

On the way back to Tuyen Quang city, we stopped to bathe in the My Lam hot springs.

My Lam hot springs are located 12 km from Tuyen Quang city. The water is clear and hot, consistently maintaining a temperature of around 67 degrees Celsius, sourced directly from an underground spring more than 150 meters deep. The tourist area has a full range of hotels and restaurants, catering to the diverse needs of visitors.

After about 3-4 hours of swimming, massage, and mineral baths, visitors can have lunch right at the hot spring area. "Lunch here is quite affordable. For 600,000 VND, you can get a buffalo hot pot for 6-7 people," Quang said.

Afternoon

Visit the Tan Trao historical site. This is also one of the must-see places in Tuyen Quang, especially if you enjoy learning about history.

Tan Trao, located in the northeast of Son Duong district, is closely associated with President Ho Chi Minh. The commune boasts 17 historical sites commemorating the early days of nation-building, such as Na Lua Hut, the Tan Trao banyan tree, Tan Trao communal house, Hong Thai communal house, and other places marking the nine-year resistance war.

These historical sites all close before 5 PM, so visitors should keep that in mind.

Alternative options: Visit Mo Waterfall (near Mac Dynasty music center and Nguyen Tat Thanh Square), Tuyen Quang Provincial Museum, and trek Hong Mountain (near Tan Trao commune). Tourists can also change the order of experiences over the two days to suit the convenience of their group.
