Fermented rice is a popular dish among many families during the Dragon Boat Festival, believed to offer health benefits, especially for cardiovascular health. But is this dish truly good for the heart, preventing strokes, and what precautions should be taken when consuming it? (Le Huong - Hanoi ).
Dr. Lam My Dung, Specialist Level 2 - Head of Nutrition Department - Tam Duc Heart Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City), advises:
Fermented rice is a familiar traditional Vietnamese dish during the Dragon Boat Festival. Besides its cultural value, this food also offers certain health benefits if consumed correctly.
100g of fermented rice contains approximately 170 kcal, 4g of protein, and is rich in B vitamins and minerals, while being virtually fat-free. Therefore, it is considered a relatively nutritious food.
However, many people believe that consuming fermented rice can prevent or treat cardiovascular disease and stroke, which is inaccurate. Fermented rice is not medicine and has no therapeutic effect on these conditions.

However, the fermentation process of rice wine produces several compounds such as lovastatin and ergosterol, which can help lower blood cholesterol. This is beneficial for cardiovascular health and contributes to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke when combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle.
People with cardiovascular disease can consume fermented rice, but it should be in moderation. Doctors recommend consuming only about 80-100g of both the solid and liquid parts at a time, depending on individual health conditions and tolerance.
5 things to avoid when eating this dish:
- No one should eat too much fermented rice because it contains alcohol produced during the fermentation process, which can cause intoxication or discomfort.
- People with allergies to yeast should not use this product.
- Young children should not eat fermented rice.
- It is not advisable to eat fermented rice on an empty stomach to avoid gastrointestinal irritation; those with stomach problems should pay particular attention to this.
- Do not drive after eating; rice wine still produces alcohol in your breath.
In addition, the ideal time to enjoy rice wine is in the morning or after a meal, allowing for better absorption by the body and minimizing unwanted effects from the natural alcohol content in the dish.
