The spices below may add some antioxidant compounds that help reduce inflammation and positively impact heart health.

Adding antioxidant-rich spices to cooking adds flavor to dishes and sometimes reduces the need for salt.

Adding spices to food is a great way to enhance the taste of food without adding salt or sugar, said Dr. Nieca Goldberg, associate professor of clinical medicine at New York Grossman School of Medicine (USA). Overdoing salt can increase blood pressure and worsen heart failure symptoms, while consuming refined sugar can lead to weight gain and increase blood sugar, which can be harmful to the heart.

Some of the spices below contain antioxidants that help fight free radicals that can wreak havoc on our bodies. In particular, for heart health, antioxidants play a role in helping to lower blood cholesterol levels, says Elizabeth Klodas, MD, a licensed preventive cardiologist in the United States.

1. Ginger helps maintain a healthy heart

This aromatic spice plays a role in maintaining a healthy heart. Eating a small amount of ginger every day can reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease and even high blood pressure. So it’s no surprise that this superfood has been a staple in many recipes for centuries. When you’re feeling down with a cold, make a cup of hot water with lemon slices, grated ginger, and honey.

2. Garlic helps reduce blood pressure

Garlic has been shown to help lower blood pressure, which is good for the heart.

Garlic is well-known for its ability to fight off colds and flu due to its antibacterial and anti-infective properties. Garlic has “superfood” properties that make it a worthy addition to your daily diet. Garlic has been shown to help lower blood pressure and reduce plaque in the arteries, a risk factor for heart problems. Additionally, garlic may help reduce the amount of enzymes that constrict blood vessels. Studies have shown that garlic supplements reduce plaque buildup in the arteries by up to 50%.

Garlic has been shown to improve the elasticity of blood vessels and reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels, says Dr. Klodas. Additionally, garlic can help lower blood pressure, which is important for a healthy heart because high triglycerides and high blood pressure are risk factors for heart disease, including heart attack and stroke.

3. Cinnamon - a spice that helps reduce cholesterol

Cinnamon has been a staple in traditional medicine for thousands of years. However, it is only recently that scientific research has proven that cinnamon is one of the most beneficial spices on the planet. Cinnamon is rich in antioxidants, including polyphenols.

One study found that cinnamon supplementation can significantly increase antioxidant levels in the blood while reducing inflammation. Cinnamon is high in calcium, manganese, and fiber, nutrients that help regulate glucose levels, lower cholesterol, and help protect against the onset of heart disease.

Another review of 13 studies found that cinnamon can reduce triglyceride and total cholesterol levels, both of which are risk factors for heart disease.

4. Turmeric prevents high blood pressure

Curcumin found in turmeric reduces the risk of developing heart disease.

Turmeric is an ingredient that adds flavor to many dishes such as curry. The spice has been a part of Eastern medical treatments for centuries but has only recently spread to other parts of the world. Scientists have recently isolated the active compound that makes turmeric a superfood. Curcumin, found specifically in turmeric, has been shown to prevent heart enlargement. Turmeric also helps fight obesity, high blood pressure and reduces the risk of developing heart disease.

5. Red chili peppers maintain healthy blood pressure

Aside from being a great taste sensation, this spicy food is actually good for your heart. The tiny red peppers contain capsaicin, a neuropeptide that helps lower cholesterol levels and maintain healthy blood pressure. While they are a great addition to a heart-healthy diet, be aware that too much chili can be bad for your stomach, so be sure to listen to your body’s reaction when adding this spice to your diet.

The five spices mentioned above all bring amazing benefits to cardiovascular health. However, Dr. Klodas noted that overusing spices, like overusing anything, can have certain effects on the body. Some spices also contain ingredients that are contraindicated for use with certain medications. Therefore, people who are taking medication should consult their doctor before adding the five spices mentioned above to their diet to ensure health safety.
