In August 2025, images of Su-34M aircraft in desert camouflage paint appeared online, but there was no official information about the purchasing country. At that time, Iran and Sudan were considered potential candidates. The appearance of aircraft bearing Algerian insignia has now put an end to all speculation.

The Su-34 is considered one of the world's longest-range fighter jets. Thanks to its large fuel capacity and sustained operational capabilities, it can perform a variety of missions, from long-range patrols to deep strikes into enemy territory.

In Algeria, the Su-34M is expected to gradually replace the Su-24M fleet, similar to the replacement process that has been underway in the Russian Aerospace Forces since 2014.

Significantly enhances Algeria's attacking capabilities.

Algeria is currently the largest foreign customer of the Su-24M series, with nearly 40 aircraft in service. This raises the possibility that the country will continue to order a similar number of Su-34M aircraft in the coming years.

If that happens, Algeria's air strike capabilities will be significantly enhanced. At the same time, the use of the Su-34M would also increase compatibility with other Russian fighter jets that form the backbone of the country's air force, including the Su-30MKA and Su-35S.

In recent years, Algeria has been continuously modernizing its air force. In February 2025, the country confirmed the delivery of its first Su-35s. By November 2025, the first fifth-generation Su-57 fighters had also been delivered.

Observers believe that in the future, the Su-57 and Su-34 will become Algeria's two main fighter aircraft, similar to the role they currently play in the Russian Air Force. The Su-34 is particularly highly regarded for its superior flight range and significantly larger weapons payload capacity.

Russia has also repeatedly mentioned the possibility of upgrading the Su-34 with technologies developed for the Su-57, including the new generation AL-51F engine.

From Su-27 fighter jets to modern long-range attack aircraft

The Su-34 development program was launched in the late 1980s, at the same time that the Soviet Union and the United States were accelerating their next-generation fighter aircraft projects.

The aircraft was developed based on the Su-27 platform, a famous Soviet air superiority fighter that entered service in 1984. Compared to the Su-27, the Su-34 is about 50% heavier, allowing it to carry significantly more fuel, thereby greatly increasing its range.

In addition to its ability to carry various types of guided missiles and bombs, the Su-34's combat capabilities are constantly being expanded. In July 2025, Russia revealed that three variants of the Sych multi-purpose reconnaissance system had been integrated into this aircraft.

The new system allows the Su-34 to perform more missions, gather real-time intelligence, and carry a full arsenal of weapons to conduct attacks.

In Algeria's inventory, the Su-34's long flight range and diverse armament are believed to enhance the country's counter-attack capabilities against targets at sea and at very long distances.

This could be the last fourth-generation fighter jet Algeria will purchase.

Many experts believe the Su-34 may be the last new fourth-generation fighter jet that Algeria will put into service. Following this deal, the majority of Algeria's fighter jet procurement budget will likely be allocated to fifth-generation fighter programs.

Besides Russia's Su-57, analysts suggest Algeria may also consider China's J-35 stealth fighter in the future. This aircraft is receiving considerable attention in the international market due to its advanced technologies and combat capabilities.

Against the backdrop of a constantly changing regional security environment, Algeria is maintaining a high-speed military modernization program. Large-scale US-led military exercises in North Africa in recent years, along with geopolitical developments in the region, have further reinforced the country's determination to strengthen its military capabilities.
