Many big clubs in Europe are keen to sign Alvarez. |
Speaking ahead of the Champions League semi-final between Atletico Madrid and Arsenal, Alvarez said he didn't want to waste energy on transfer rumors.
The 2022 World Cup champion emphasized that the priority right now is what's happening at Atletico.
"I can't constantly appear to refute everything that's written every week, because the truth is, something new always comes up every week," Alvarez shared.
This statement is seen as the 26-year-old striker's first direct response to the wave of speculation that has lasted for weeks.
Barcelona are reportedly looking for a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski and have Alvarez as their top target. However, the deal is not going to be easy.
Atletico are looking to sign Alvarez in 2024 for a fee that could reach 95 million euros and currently hold a significant advantage in negotiations.
The Argentine striker's contract runs until 2030, with a release clause of up to 500 million euros. This is a major obstacle for Barca, especially given the club's ongoing financial pressure.
Earlier, there were reports that the Alvarez family had been looking for a house in Catalonia to prepare for their new life.
However, the player's agent, Fernando Hidalgo, quickly denied the rumors completely. He asserted that no member of the player's family had been in Barcelona recently.
With the transfer market heating up, Alvarez remains a key player in coach Diego Simeone's plans. Atletico are even considering extending his contract to keep the South American star.
