The soft, golden-ripe banana flesh is wrapped in a layer of sticky rice, then grilled over hot coals until the outer skin is golden brown, crispy, and has a faint aroma of charcoal and smoke. One example is the banana sweet soup stall in front of house number 392 Hoang Dieu, or 190/1 Ong Ich Khiem… The similarity between these sweet soup stalls is that they have been around for nearly 20 years and are the “childhood” of many city residents. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh, who lives next to the sweet soup stall at 190/1 Ong Ich Khiem, said that this simple dish not only warms the heart on rainy days, but also evokes old memories, when her family gathered around the fire, waiting for each hot banana slice to give off its aroma.

In the city by the Han River, banana sweet soup vendors prioritize using evenly ripe bananas, which are sweet and chewy when grilled over charcoal. Along with a hot bowl of sweet soup with just the right amount of sweetness, the image of the vendor working quickly over the charcoal stove seems to attract passersby to stop by and enjoy the food and admire it.
