Amazon cuts 16,000 office jobs.
This is the most drastic move yet by the e-commerce giant to eliminate cumbersome administrative procedures and restructure resources in the face of increasingly fierce competition in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
In an official announcement on January 28th, Beth Galetti, Amazon's Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Technology, confirmed that the company is working to strengthen its organization by reducing middle management levels, increasing proactiveness, and eliminating bureaucracy.
For affected employees in the US market, Amazon will implement a 90-day support policy to help them find new jobs within the company. In addition, Amazon is committed to providing severance pay and other career transition support packages.
This round of layoffs comes just months after Amazon announced it was cutting 14,000 jobs. The scale of these recent layoffs is reminiscent of the aggressive restructuring in late 2022 and early 2023, when the company cut as many as 27,000 jobs.
CEO Andy Jassy has repeatedly affirmed his commitment to streamlining the company's management structure, which has become bloated after massive hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2025, Jassy also warned about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on workforce size as Amazon accelerates the automation of its operational processes.
Statistics as of September 30th show that Amazon currently employs approximately 1.57 million people globally, the majority of whom work in its logistics system. The office workforce is estimated at around 350,000. Therefore, this decision to cut 16,000 jobs is equivalent to eliminating approximately 4.6% of the company's total office workforce.
