Da Nang receives geographical indication protection for 'Tien Phuoc' pepper.

Da Nang City officially received the geographical indication protection certificate for "Tien Phuoc" pepper, opening up opportunities to increase value and expand the consumer market.

Well-deserved recognition

On the morning of May 25th, in Tien Phuoc commune (Da Nang city), the People's Committee of the commune, in coordination with the Da Nang Department of Science and Technology, the Vietnam Intellectual Property Office, and the Institute of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, organized a conference to announce and receive the geographical indication protection certificate for "Tien Phuoc" pepper.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Hung Anh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tien Phuoc commune, said that the granting of Geographical Indication Registration Certificate No. 00152 for Tien Phuoc pepper by the Intellectual Property Office is a great honor and source of pride for the Party Committee, government, and people of Tien Phuoc, Thanh Binh, Lanh Ngoc, and Son Cam Ha communes (Da Nang City).

According to the leaders of Tien Phuoc commune People's Committee, this is not only a well-deserved recognition of the efforts and dedication of farmers, cooperatives, businesses, and the attention and support of all levels and sectors in the journey of preserving and promoting the value of a product that has been associated with the Tien Phuoc area for many generations; it also opens up great opportunities to enhance brand value and increase the competitiveness of the product in the market; contributing to promoting agricultural economic development, improving people's income and living standards.

“ In the coming time, the People's Committee of Tien Phuoc commune will closely coordinate with localities in the geographical indication area to protect the reputation and quality of Tien Phuoc pepper products; continue to promote the application of science and technology, develop production in a sustainable direction; strengthen trade promotion, expand consumption markets and elevate the brand of Tien Phuoc pepper in the market,” affirmed Nguyen Hung Anh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tien Phuoc commune. He also committed that the People's Committee of Tien Phuoc commune will effectively fulfill its role as the geographical indication management organization; accompany people, cooperatives, and businesses to develop the Tien Phuoc pepper brand further, contributing to promoting the image of Tien Phuoc homeland and Da Nang city to domestic and international consumers.

A great opportunity to increase economic value and expand the market.

Analysis data from the Da Nang Center for Product Quality Inspection shows that Tien Phuoc pepper meets and exceeds Vietnamese standards in many aspects, such as Piperin content of 4.03% compared to the Vietnamese standard of 4%.

In particular, the content of non-volatile ether extract is 9.78%, much higher than the Vietnamese standard of 6%. This is a unique characteristic of Tien Phuoc pepper that no other pepper possesses. With this superior quality, in 2009 Tien Phuoc pepper was granted a collective trademark certificate by the Vietnam Intellectual Property Office.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Da Nang City Department of Science and Technology, the protection of the Tien Phuoc geographical indication for pepper products originated from a local proposal and, after surveying and evaluating the product, the Department of Science and Technology developed and proposed a scientific and technological task. The registration, management, and development of the geographical indication for Tien Phuoc pepper products is part of the National Intellectual Property Development Program until 2030 and has been approved by the Minister of Science and Technology.

The results of the task were documented in Decision No. 179/QD-SHTT dated April 29, 2026, issued by the Intellectual Property Office, granting Certificate of Geographical Indication Registration No. 00152 for the product "Tien Phuoc" pepper. According to the protection certificate, the People's Committee of Tien Phuoc commune is the representative organization of the communes assigned to manage the geographical indication "Tien Phuoc" for pepper, with the protected geographical area encompassing Tien Phuoc, Lanh Ngoc, Thanh Binh, and Son Cam Ha communes of Da Nang City.

The leaders of the Da Nang Department of Science and Technology emphasized that the granting of the geographical indication protection certificate for "Tien Phuoc" is an official recognition by the State of the reputation, quality, and unique origin of the product; and a scientific acknowledgment of the quality of Tien Phuoc pepper. " The granting of geographical indication protection for 'Tien Phuoc' simultaneously opens up great opportunities to enhance economic value, expand markets, promote sustainable agricultural development, contribute to spreading the value of the product, develop the economy and society, and ensure consumers use products with guaranteed quality and origin according to the geographical indication," said Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Da Nang Department of Science and Technology. He affirmed that the Department of Science and Technology of the city is committed to continuing to work alongside the locality in managing, developing, and elevating the brand of the "Tien Phuoc" geographical indication in the future.

Pepper products from the communes of Tien Phuoc, Thanh Binh, Lanh Ngoc, and Son Cam Ha (Da Nang City) have officially been granted intellectual property protection with geographical indication number 00152 “Tien Phuoc”.

This is a significant milestone recognizing the efforts of farmers in Tien Phuoc region, while also opening up great opportunities to enhance economic value, affirm brand recognition, and ensure sustainable development for local agricultural products in domestic and international markets.
