Amorim has been constantly smiling since leaving MU. |
The 40-year-old manager left Manchester on a private jet on Saturday, bound for Lisbon. Amorim continued to appear with a smile on his face, a stark contrast to the storm of criticism and controversy surrounding him at Old Trafford. Amorim had also been seen smiling broadly immediately after being sacked by MU.
Amorim parted ways with MU on January 5th, just one day after a tense press conference following the 1-1 draw with Leeds United. At that time, he publicly issued an ultimatum to the board: "Either support me or sack me." That move was considered the final straw, causing a complete breakdown in his relationship with the club's top management.
According to British media, Amorim received over £10 million in compensation. He, his wife Maria, and their two children live in a rented villa costing £15,000 a month in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. The fact that his children are saying goodbye to their friends and teachers at their private school is seen as a sign that the Amorim family will no longer live in England.
In 63 matches managing MU, Amorim only won 25 games and even lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final last season. This is not enough of a record to convince a club that is always hungry for trophies.
Darren Fletcher is currently in charge as interim manager. Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick have emerged as two strong candidates for the interim manager position until the end of the season.
