Amorim spoke very frankly. |
The 40-year-old manager's blunt remarks in the press conference after the 1-1 draw against Leeds United not only reflected personal fatigue but also exposed deep cracks in the Red Devils' operational structure.
Although officially appointed as head coach since Ineos took over and brought him to Old Trafford in November 2024, Amorim insists he came here with the expectation of becoming a true "manager," not just a coach purely on the pitch.
According to Amorim, he was promised more power to rebuild the culture and reshape a club that had been in decline for a long time.
"I'm here to be the head coach of Manchester United, not just to coach," Amorim emphasized. "I know I'm not Tuchel, Conte, or Mourinho, but I am the head coach of Manchester United."
The former Sporting manager also frankly stated that he would not resign, but his current role would only last until his contract expires after 18 months or until the board decides on a sudden change.
Notably, Amorim also urged football director Jason Wilcox and other departments within the club to "do their job," from scouting to long-term strategic planning. His admission that he doesn't expect any new signings in this month's transfer window further highlights the limited power Amorim is facing.
The constant mentions of Gary Neville and the external criticisms also show that Amorim is under immense pressure from the environment around Old Trafford. For him, the issue is not just the results on the pitch, but the way Manchester United is run. Without a change from the top management, the next 18 months could very well be Ruben Amorim's last at the "Theatre of Dreams".
