Eating snail buffet as recommended by TikToker, 7 people hospitalized

(Dan Tri) - 7 people in Phu Yen province were hospitalized for treatment after eating snails at a restaurant recommended by some TikTokers.

On June 4, a representative of the Dong Hoa Town Medical Center, Phu Yen Province, confirmed that they were receiving and treating 7 patients with food poisoning. These people showed signs of stomachache, vomiting, and diarrhea after eating snails at a restaurant on Hung Vuong Street, Tuy Hoa City, Phu Yen Province.

Ms. Truong Thi Bang Tam (41 years old, residing in Dong Hoa town) said that on the afternoon of June 2, she and 10 other people went to the restaurant to eat snail buffet. This restaurant sells meals for 140,000 VND/person, in return, customers can eat as many types of snails as they want.

According to Ms. Tam, her family learned about the snail restaurant through a review clip of a TikToker in Phu Yen province.

"My family of 11 people went to the restaurant, but 2 people did not eat. After finishing eating, when we got home, at around 8 p.m. the same day, all 9 people who ate the snails vomited, had diarrhea, and had stomach aches, so they went to buy medicine. By noon on June 3, 6 people were hospitalized, while the others took medicine and were treated at home," said Ms. Tam.

Similarly, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van (35 years old, residing in Hoa Vinh ward, Dong Hoa town) was also hospitalized after eating a snail buffet at the above restaurant on the evening of June 2.

According to Ms. Van, on the evening of June 2, her family of 5 ate a snail buffet at the restaurant. By 9 p.m. the same day, all 5 people showed signs of vomiting and stomach cramps and bought medicine to treat themselves at home.

On the morning of June 3, the health of the others gradually recovered, but Ms. Van had diarrhea and vomited continuously, and fainted so her family took her to the emergency room.

Ms. Bich Van said that her family learned about the snail buffet restaurant mentioned above through review clips of some TikTokers.

A representative of the Dong Hoa Town Medical Center said that after being treated at the center with antibiotics and IV fluids, the health of the 7 patients has stabilized. The cause of vomiting, stomachache, and diarrhea was food poisoning.
