According to the latest annual report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India added 10 nuclear warheads over the past year, bringing the total number of warheads in its stockpile from 180 to an estimated 190.
This size is now only 35 warheads short of the UK's nuclear arsenal (225 warheads). Notably, since August 2024, New Delhi has officially commissioned two new strategic nuclear submarines, INS Arighaat and INS Aridaman, both capable of carrying ballistic missiles equipped with nuclear warheads.
Along with the increased use of enclosed-case missile systems, experts believe that India's nuclear modernization program is undergoing a clear strategic reorientation, focusing on developing long-range launch vehicles to enhance its extended deterrence capabilities in the region.
According to SIPRI, the modernization and expansion of nuclear arsenals is underway in many countries that possess these weapons. Accordingly, the world currently possesses approximately 12,187 nuclear warheads, of which about 9,745 are in military stockpiles and are ready to be deployed when needed.

Although Russia and the United States still hold the majority of the world's nuclear warheads, SIPRI notes that the most significant developments are currently concentrated in Asia. China is estimated to have increased its nuclear warhead stockpile from approximately 600 to 620 in the past year, while Pakistan maintains its arsenal at around 170 warheads but continues to develop new delivery systems and accumulate fissile material for future programs.
SIPRI warns that the increasing focus of countries on upgrading their nuclear capabilities, along with the emergence of new military technologies, could increase the risk of strategic instability and complicate future security crises.
