Is it harmful to eat a lot of pig tongue?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên31/10/2024

I really enjoy eating pig's tongue because it's crispy, delicious, and not greasy, so I often include it in my menu. I would like to ask the doctor if eating a lot of pig's tongue is harmful to my health or increases the risk of any diseases? (Ha Quy, 35 years old, from Binh Duong )

Dr. Le Thao Nguyen (nutritionist, Nam Saigon International General Hospital) answers:

Pork tongue is a familiar food item, commonly found in everyday meals or celebratory feasts in Vietnam. Statistics show that pork tongue is highly nutritious, especially beneficial for pregnant women or those recovering from illness.

The main nutritional components of pig's tongue include:

Protein : Pig tongue contains a high amount of protein, approximately 14.2g of protein per 100g of food. The protein in pig tongue helps build and maintain muscle tissue, and promotes cell growth and repair.

Vitamins and minerals : Pig tongue contains vitamin B12, vitamin B3, and notable minerals such as iron and zinc. Thanks to these vitamins and minerals, pig tongue is a food source that supports the nervous system, is good for the skin and digestive system, and prevents anemia.

Fat : Every 100g of pork tongue contains approximately 12.8g of fat, mainly in the form of saturated fat, which helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins.

Calories : On average, 100g of pork tongue contains approximately 178 calories. The calorie count will vary depending on the cooking method.

Cholesterol: Pig tongue has a relatively high cholesterol content. 100g of pig tongue contains approximately 101mg of cholesterol.

Pork tongue is nutritious but also contains a lot of cholesterol, so it should be eaten in moderation.

Pork tongue is nutritious but also contains a lot of cholesterol.

Pork tongue is a nutritious food that can help improve health. However, it also contains a significant amount of cholesterol. Therefore, it's necessary to control the frequency of its consumption in daily meals, especially for those with cardiovascular problems, high blood pressure, the elderly, or dyslipidemia, as these individuals need to control their cholesterol intake (below 200 mg of cholesterol per day).

In addition, pig tongue also has a high purine content (approximately 136 mg purine/100 g of pig tongue), which is a compound that breaks down and metabolizes into uric acid when entering the body, potentially causing hyperuricemia. Therefore, people with joint problems and gout should be cautious and avoid eating pig tongue frequently.
