"Eating pho doesn't necessarily require chili sauce, but if it's available, I'll definitely use it. Otherwise, it would be a waste," shared Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Phuong, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, while enjoying pho at Pho Day 2025.
Not only Mr. Phuong, but Tuoi Tre Online also randomly surveyed many diners at the event of all ages and received the same answer: they cannot eat pho without chili sauce and hoisin sauce.
Mr. Lai Huu Anh (from the former District 4) said he learned about the event through social media and decided to come and experience it. That morning, he tried three different types of pho.
For Mr. Huu Anh, pho is incomplete without chili sauce and hoisin sauce. "It's become a habit. Personally, I find Cholimex sauce to be the most suitable for my family's taste," he shared.

Right at the Cholimex booth during the event, he immediately bought four bottles of soy sauce to take home and use gradually.
Similarly, Ms. Thuy (Binh Thanh district) brought her family of three to Pho Day early in the morning. The whole family ate a total of six bowls of pho and "set a goal" to come back for more in the evening. "We eat pho with both chili sauce and hoisin sauce. Adding sauce really enhances the flavor of the pho," she shared, adding that her family has trusted Cholimex for a long time because it suits their taste.
Eating pho with chili sauce or hoisin sauce partly reflects the diversity in how Vietnamese people enjoy pho, and this is also a habit deeply ingrained in the taste of many.

Chili sauce is an indispensable condiment in the meals of Mr. Hiep, originally from Da Nang and currently studying in Ho Chi Minh City. He shared that his preference is that pho must have chili sauce.
"It's not just pho; I also use chili sauce with instant noodles. We always have chili sauce at home, especially during holidays," he said.
The Pho Day 12-12 program, now in its 9th year with the theme "Elevating Vietnamese Rice - Spreading Across Five Continents," will take place over two days, December 13th and 14th, at the former Tax Department Store area, 135 Nguyen Hue Street, Saigon Ward, Ho Chi Minh City.
