In Thanh Quang commune (Thanh Ha district), there is a plant nursery that is bustling with customers visiting and buying plants to decorate for Tet (Lunar New Year) and prepare for planting in the spring.
The owner of that nursery is Mr. Pham Van Nghia (born in 1977), a hardworking, diligent, and innovative former soldier.
After graduating from high school in 1995, Nghia enlisted in the 131st Naval Engineering Regiment (now the 131st Naval Engineering Brigade, Hai Phong). His time in the military helped him mature, become more confident, and served as a stepping stone for important decisions later on. In 1997, he was discharged from the army and returned to his hometown, beginning to explore ways to develop his family's economy .
Phu Tinh village in Thanh Quang commune is known as a long-standing seedling production area. After trying his hand at several other jobs, Nghia decided to make a living by following in his ancestors' footsteps.
Through diligent learning and accumulating experience, in 2007, Mr. Nghia started producing fruit tree seedlings on an area of 500 m² right in his village. He painstakingly researched and learned new grafting techniques that yielded high productivity. He brought in several new, high-quality varieties for cultivation.
According to Mr. Nghia, for seedlings, pest and disease control techniques account for up to 70% of the success. Understanding this, he visited seedling production facilities inside and outside the province to learn, and also studied pest and disease control methods on social media and specialized books and journals. Along with applying traditional techniques passed down from his ancestors, he invested in a water-saving irrigation system for his nursery to reduce costs.
Starting with just 500 m² and seeing positive results, Mr. Nghia boldly borrowed money to bid for and lease additional land for production. Today, he owns three seedling production facilities with a total area of over 30,000 m² in Thanh Quang and Ha Thanh communes (Tu Ky district), and one facility in Hai Phong , supplying millions of seedlings to the market annually.
Mr. Nghia's seedling production facilities are providing employment for 10 permanent workers with stable salaries of over 5 million VND/person/month and 20 seasonal workers with wages of 170,000 VND/person/day.
Besides helping to develop his family's economy, his seedling production facility also engages in many charitable activities and supports local movements.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dinh, Chairman of the Thanh Quang Commune Farmers' Association, commented: "Associate member Pham Van Nghia is dynamic, creative, and always searching for new varieties to meet consumer demands. He actively participates in the commune's Farmers' Association movements, especially the movement for farmers to compete in excellent production and business. He is a role model for other members to learn from and follow."
Thanks to his tireless efforts, Mr. Nghia has achieved considerable success. Each year, his family earns approximately 1 billion VND in profit from the seedling nursery business. From 2021 to 2024, Mr. Nghia consistently received the title of "Excellent Farmer in Production and Business" from the province.
