At last night's WWDC 2026 event, Apple introduced macOS 27 Golden Gate, highlighting new features and performance improvements. This operating system is expected to be available in October. The company hasn't announced which Mac models will receive the update; however, all devices running Intel chips will be left behind.
Near the bottom of the macOS information page on Apple's website, there is a statement confirming that macOS 27 Golden Gate is only compatible with devices running Apple Silicon chips.
The specific list of Mac computers that will be upgraded to macOS 27 includes the MacBook Air M1, MacBook Pro M1, the 13-inch (2020), 14-inch (2021), and 16-inch (2021) MacBook Pro M1 models, MacBook Neo, iMac M1 2020, Mac mini M1, Mac Studio 2022, and newer versions of these models.
Therefore, no more Intel-powered MacBooks, iMacs, or Mac minis will receive updates, nor will any Mac Pro or iMac Pro models be able to run macOS 27. Apple's future high-performance workstations will rely entirely on Apple Silicon.
According to TechRadar , by focusing on its own custom-designed chips using the Arm architecture, Apple no longer has to worry about Macs running on Intel's x86 chip technology. This will allow the macOS development team to focus resources on improving software performance and adding more features in the future.
Users of Macs running macOS 26 Tahoe, including the MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020), iMac (2020), and Mac Pro (2019), can still receive necessary security patches. However, to access new features, the only way is to upgrade to a newer Mac model.
This change by Apple also affects the Hackingtos "modding" community, which relies on software versions for Intel chip configurations to install macOS on custom-built, non-Apple-official computers. Golden Gate's decision to stop supporting Intel-based products puts an end to the upgrade hopes of this community.
