Apple has just released a new security report showing that it successfully blocked over $2.2 billion in fraudulent transactions on the App Store in the past year alone, thanks to a combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and a team of manual reviewers working continuously on a global scale. Amidst the boom in AI-powered application development tools, scammers are also leveraging the technology to create more sophisticated fake software, forcing Apple to build a multi-layered defense system to detect and block threats before they even reach users' devices. According to the report, Apple's proactive security system has rejected more than 1.1 billion fraudulent customer account creations and locked more than 40 million violating accounts, while also purging hundreds of thousands of developer accounts suspected of manipulating rankings or distributing unethical content.
One of Apple's most important "weapons" is its extremely rigorous app review process, where over 9.1 million applications have been processed and more than 2 million apps or updates have been rejected for failing to meet security, privacy, and user safety standards. Apple's AI technology is particularly effective in detecting "pirated" applications, which are software programs initially registered as normal utilities or games but then secretly alter their source code to carry out financial fraud or steal user data. Beyond protecting the App Store ecosystem, Apple has also expanded its operations to external, unofficial app stores to prevent tens of thousands of apps containing malware, gambling, or harmful content, while blocking millions of unauthorized installations from unapproved sources. In addition to controlling apps, Apple is also cracking down on fake reviews by removing nearly 195 million spam reviews to ensure the rating system accurately reflects real-world experiences and helps users avoid being misled by low-quality apps. In the payments sector, the Apple Pay platform and StoreKit technology have protected over 5.4 million stolen credit cards from fraudulent transactions, demonstrating Apple's ongoing efforts to transform the App Store into one of the world's most secure digital ecosystems.
