According to some insiders, Apple plans to move its iPhone assembly operations for export to the US market to India as early as 2026. This comes after President Donald Trump exerted trade pressure on China, forcing Apple to consider relocating its assembly plants to markets with lower tariffs.
Currently, this transfer activity is showing signs of significantly accelerating. On May 13th, Business Standard cited a supplier report submitted to the Indian government revealing that the number of Apple shipments exported has doubled. Specifically, in April, the value of Apple product exports from India reached over $2 billion , a 116% increase compared to the same period last year.
This increase aligns with other reports on iPhone imports from the country to the US. Specifically, the Times of India reported on May 1st that 97.6% of India's total iPhone exports in March went to the US.
The Financial Times noted that Apple's latest move is based on a strategy to diversify its supply chain. In particular, the iPhone factory is implementing its plan faster than investors anticipated. They aim to import all of the more than 60 million iPhones assembled in India into the US market. To realize this ambition, Apple will require its partners in the South Asian country to double their assembly output.
After nearly two decades of heavy spending in China to create world- leading manufacturing facilities, the company has risen to become a $3 trillion tech giant. The country of over a billion people, where most iPhones are manufactured through companies like Foxconn, has been subjected to very high tariffs from President Donald Trump.
Following the announcement of the new tariffs, Apple's market value quickly plummeted by $700 billion , prompting the company to rapidly export iPhones manufactured in India to the US to avoid additional costs.
In recent years, Apple has consistently boosted its manufacturing capacity in India through partners such as Tata Electronics and Foxconn. However, the company still assembles the majority of its smartphones in China.
