After years of competition in the smartphone market, Apple and Google have made headlines in the tech world by confirming a collaboration on artificial intelligence (AI). Gemini will not just be a downloadable app on the iPhone, but will become the core platform for Siri and the Apple Intelligence ecosystem.
In a press release sent to the media on January 13, Apple did not hesitate to praise its long-time rival, asserting that the decision was made after a rigorous technical evaluation process.

"We determined that Google's technology provides the most powerful platform for Foundation Models. We are excited about the innovative experiences this collaboration will bring to users," an Apple representative said.
Foundation Models is a platform introduced by Apple in October 2025 that helps developers build experiences based on large-scale language models (LLMs), from personal notes and assignment summaries to conversational explanations of scientific concepts.
According to 9to5mac and TechCrunch, Apple chose Gemini because of its processing power of up to 1.2 trillion parameters, far superior to the model Apple is currently developing. This allows Apple to quickly realize its promise of a next-generation Siri capable of understanding personal context and performing complex tasks within applications.
Previously, on January 12th, Google announced that the two companies had signed a multi-year cooperation agreement, under which Google's Gemini model and cloud technology will power Siri and Apple Intelligence in the future.
This collaboration has raised concerns about monopolistic practices. Tech billionaire Elon Musk expressed his concerns on X on January 13th: "It seems like an unreasonable concentration of power for Google, as they also own Android and Chrome."
Meanwhile, both Apple and Google have reassured users, emphasizing that Google only provides AI processing capabilities, while Apple remains responsible for protecting privacy. Google will not be allowed to use iPhone users' personal data to train its own AI models. Gemini will operate within a secure sandbox environment established by Apple, similar to how ChatGPT was previously integrated.
Neither party has disclosed financial details, but experts estimate that Apple will pay Google around one billion dollars annually.
The combination of Google's intelligence and Apple's experience is expected to appear as early as the iOS 26.4 update in early this year. At that time, Siri is expected to no longer be just a voice assistant, but a true AI agent, capable of understanding on-screen content and performing tasks across multiple applications as requested by the user.
