According to Bloomberg , Apple is eyeing John Ternus, Director of Hardware Engineering, as a successor to CEO Tim Cook. This comes as the US technology giant enters a leadership transition phase.
After more than a decade of stability at the top, Apple is beginning to see significant changes. The departure of Jeff Williams, the chief operating officer, is seen as the first step in a wave of high-level personnel changes. Williams, who was once considered a “potential successor” to Tim Cook, stepped down from his executive roles in July and is expected to leave the company this year.
Meanwhile, some other key executives appear to be considering their futures. Johny Srouji, head of hardware technologies, is also considering retirement. If that happens, the two internal names most likely to succeed Mr. Srouji would be Zongjian Chen, who oversees the modem group, and Sri Santhanam, who is in charge of device processors.
Lisa Jackson, the former head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency who has led Apple's sustainability initiatives since 2013, is also considering retirement. She has handed over much of her direct management role to her deputies.
In addition, the AI division led by John Giannandrea is under great pressure after the slow implementation of Apple Intelligence features and Siri improvements. Sources said Apple is looking for senior AI personnel from outside, even considering Meta's leaders.
However, the biggest attention is now on the future of CEO Tim Cook, who turns 65 next month. The manager has not announced plans to retire, but the lack of a “number two” after Williams’ departure has observers wondering about the next generation of Apple leaders.
Among the internal candidates, John Ternus is considered the most likely choice. Having joined Apple in 2001, Ternus has played a key role in developing the Mac, iPad and most recently the iPhone Air, the first smartphone with a new design in many years.
He is also a regular face at product launch events, trusted by Cook to have more decision-making power in product direction and technology strategy.
The fact that Apple has been emphasizing Ternus in recent media campaigns has further reinforced the perception that he is the “chosen one.” During the iPhone 17 launch event, the manager greeted guests at the Apple Regent Street store (London), a role previously held by Cook.
Although Cook remains active at work, taking business trips and directly overseeing global operations, many inside sources believe Ternus' succession is just a matter of time.
