On the evening of November 18th, the Singapore national team came from behind to defeat Hong Kong (China) 2-1, thereby officially securing the 20th ticket to the 2027 Asian Cup Finals.
This marks Singapore's first appearance in the prestigious continental tournament through the qualifying rounds. Since the tournament's inception in 1956, "The Lions" had never qualified, except for the 1984 tournament when they participated as the host nation.
Before Singapore, the Syrian national team was the first to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup from the third qualifying round. With the 2027 Asian Cup expanding to 24 teams, host nation Saudi Arabia and 18 other teams secured their places early through their performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Indonesia is the only Southeast Asian team to have secured a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup early through the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Singapore became the second Southeast Asian team to qualify for the continental football tournament. And three of the remaining four tickets to the 2027 Asian Cup are also being contested by Southeast Asian teams.
After their 4-0 victory over Sri Lanka in the fifth matchday of Group D of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, Thailand holds the advantage. They and Turkmenistan lead Group D with 12 points each after five matches. Thailand (+10) has a better goal difference than Turkmenistan (+5).

In their final match, Thailand will host Turkmenistan at home. To officially qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup, the "War Elephants" only need to defeat their opponent in the final match.
In Group A, the Philippines and Tajikistan are leading with 13 points each. The Philippines are at a disadvantage due to an inferior goal difference. However, in the decisive match, the Southeast Asian representative only needs to defeat Tajikistan to secure their qualification.
Group F, featuring Vietnam and Malaysia, is the most complicated. The Malaysian national team ended 2025 with a 1-0 victory over Nepal at home in Bukit Jalil Stadium in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers on November 18th.
Malaysia leads Group F with 15 points, while Vietnam is second with 9 points and has one game in hand. Coach Kim Sang-sik's team will face Laos in Vientiane on the evening of November 19th.
In theory, Vietnam has very little chance of winning the top spot. However, Malaysia's naturalization scandals could turn everything upside down. The "Malay Tigers" could face forfeitures of one or two matches due to the falsification scandal involving documents from the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
Overall, with at least 2 (and possibly up to 5) representatives in the 2027 Asian Cup, Southeast Asian football is having a successful qualifying campaign.
