Australia has announced plans to increase defense spending by $7.25 billion over the next 10 years, aiming to accelerate the delivery of its navy's future surface fleet and expand its shipbuilding industry.
According to the plan, Australia will have a naval force of 26 large surface warships, up from the current 11 and the largest fleet the country has had since the end of World War II.
Among the newly built ships will be Hunter-class destroyers, multi-purpose destroyers, and autonomous surface combatants. Some will be equipped with Tomahawk long-range missiles. It is expected that some ships will be built in the port city of Adelaide in South Australia, creating more than 3,000 jobs, while others will be designed in the United States or possibly in Spain, Germany, South Korea, and Japan.
