Yamal's sarcastic and mocking remarks about Real Madrid ahead of El Clásico did not provide any psychological advantage for either him or Barcelona. On the contrary, they backfired.
Yamal panicked, Real Madrid fought fiercely.
Ahead of El Clásico, Lamine Yamal has been constantly making sarcastic remarks. He even went so far as to slander Real Madrid, saying the Spanish giants cheat but complain too much.
He even compared Real Madrid to an amateur team. Then, when faced with backlash, he used social media to continue his war on his opponent. His bold words and actions show that Yamal is very confident. This is understandable, given that last season he and Barcelona convincingly won all four matches against Real Madrid.
But it was only in the recent match that one could see how panicked Yamal was. First, just look at the statistics. A technically gifted player, skilled at dribbling and ball control like Yamal, lost possession 22 times. His pass accuracy was 80%, but most were harmless back passes and short passes. The Barcelona star also only managed two shots, neither of which were on target.
Looking at the match itself, it's clear Yamal didn't dare take risks with his play. Every time he had the ball, the Real Madrid players immediately swarmed him as if they wanted to devour him alive. When Yamal moved to his preferred right wing, he encountered the strong and skillful Alvaro Careras. When he dropped back to the center, he faced the fiery Tchouameni. Even attacking stars like Mbappe, Bellingham, and especially Vinicius were frequently in the same frame in challenges with Yamal.
It could be argued that talent wasn't the main reason Yamal received such close attention from the Real Madrid players; it was his attitude. His somewhat arrogant statements didn't make him play any better. On the contrary, the Real Madrid players, with their self-respect and burning spirit, played with determination and passion.
And then, on a day when Yamal was "invisible" due to panic, Barcelona lost 1-2 to Real Madrid.

A costly lesson
At 18, Yamal was already a world-class star. However, he still retained some childish traits, most notably his arrogance. In sports in general, and not just football, using excessive language and actions before a match is not uncommon.
International media even use the term "trash talk" to describe this. Martial arts like boxing and MMA are most prone to this, with Conor McGregor being a prime example. He may not be an exceptionally skilled fighter, but his ability to "trash talk" is unmatched. Organizers of many sports frequently exploit such outrageous statements to promote their image and attract attention.
To be fair, Lamine Yamal's attack on Real Madrid has heated up the El Clásico match, attracting more attention than in previous years. La Liga certainly benefits, and to some extent, both Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Even the Barcelona management and coaching staff could have easily warned or cautioned Yamal to be careful with his words, but they didn't. This has led to suspicions that it was a staged act to attract attention to the El Clásico match.
But Yamal needs to remember that such impulsiveness doesn't always work out. At 18, he's easily drawn into such arguments, losing focus on the big matches. Even Barcelona fans have called for the star to learn humility like Messi. This shows they are also concerned about Yamal's personality.
The recent defeat against Real Madrid served as a wake-up call for Yamal when dealing with the media and public opinion before important matches.
