Many essays in the 10th grade literature exam in Ho Chi Minh City received high scores ranging from 8.5 to 9.5 points. As the examiners jokingly put it: the exam questions touched the students' hearts, and the students' essays... touched the hearts of the examiners.

According to the examiners, the percentage of students scoring above 8 in this year's literature exam was quite good. In each batch of papers graded (usually 24 papers), on average, there were about 3 papers scoring 8 or higher, accounting for more than 10%.

The reason candidates achieved such high scores is because their papers were very complete, neat, and legible, with no questions omitted, and all questions were thoroughly addressed. To achieve high scores, most papers had to score almost full marks on the reading comprehension section (3 points). Points were not lost on the expression section, and points were also awarded for creativity (usually 0.25 points in both the social commentary and literary analysis questions).

Most importantly, because this year's exam theme focused on "the rhythm of the heart" and reflection on a life of selfless dedication, requiring genuine emotion, heartfelt commitment, and sincere feelings from the candidates, the high-scoring papers truly touched the hearts of the judges.

Basic knowledge errors in the Vietnamese language subject.

In the reading comprehension section (3 points), candidates made mistakes on all four questions a, b, c, and d. Question a was a recognition question; candidates only needed to focus on the words at the beginning of the text to answer correctly. However, many candidates added extra, redundant words, resulting in lost points.

In question b, according to the answer key, the independent clause is "parenthetical clause: sacred sea and islands of the Fatherland". Due to a lack of confidence in Vietnamese language knowledge, many candidates answered "phù chú" or "phụ trú" and therefore received no points.

For question c (what do you understand about the soldiers in the Spratly Islands?), candidates need to answer with 4 points from the keywords: "young age", "love for the sea and islands", "strong and courageous", "overcoming hardships and challenges to protect the sovereignty of the homeland's sea and islands". If the candidate only focuses on the words of the 4 lines of poetry, they will only get point 1 right (worth 0.25/1 point).

Question d, at first glance, seems easy; candidates only need to state the action. However, it's not easy to score points on this. The action must be practical and specific (0.25 points), not general (like picking up trash, environmental issues, etc.) or simply repeating the text's main idea. Furthermore, it requires candidates to convincingly explain their choice of action (0.5 points) and express themselves well (0.25 points).

The social commentary question (3 points), with the requirement to "reflect on the advice to think with your heart," means "emphasizing the power of evaluating and perceiving things around us with emotions, by delving into the depths of our inner world rather than stopping at rationality, accuracy, and science ."

However, many candidates went off-topic due to a misunderstanding of the subject matter and discussed other issues (such as compassion for humanity in general). In these cases, the judges only awarded points for structure (0.5 points) and expression (0.25 points).

Question 2 of the literary analysis essay (4 points) requires analyzing a poem or stanza from the curriculum or outside the textbook. Many candidates chose to analyze a short story instead. This error is also only graded based on structure and expression, similar to the social commentary essay question mentioned above.

Teachers predict that the number of students scoring 8 points on the 10th grade literature exam will increase.

In addition, some papers have sloppy handwriting that is very difficult to read. Many examiners suggested that the grading rubric should include criteria for deducting points for handwriting (difficult to read, illegible, and attitude while writing) to both correct students' handwriting in future exams and encourage them to improve their writing skills.
