The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has announced the structure and sample test questions for 3 subjects of the 10th grade entrance exam in 2026. With the new points in the literature exam, teachers have given some notes.

Mr. Vo Kim Bao, Head of the Literature Group - Nguyen Du Secondary School (Ben Thanh Ward), said that this year is the second year that students nationwide take the 10th grade entrance exam according to the 2018 General Education Program. Therefore, students need to practice a lot and develop their real abilities instead of coping by memorizing. The exam certainly will not have any content that can be memorized to complete the test.

The language materials in the 10th grade literature exam are completely new and not included in all three textbooks. Students need to proactively study more.

Teacher Vo Kim Bao noted: For literature, students should review by topic, not by order. When reviewing by topic, students will have a comprehensive view, connecting knowledge between lessons and knowledge learned in grades 6, 7, and 8.

You can review according to the following topics: Story topics (short stories, legends, Nom poems, detective stories); poetry topics (knowledge about poetry in general, free verse, six-eight verse); informational text topics (pay attention to how information is presented); argumentative text topics (pay attention to the relationship between elements in argumentative texts)

In addition, students need to review the basic knowledge learned in grades 6, 7, and 8 such as rhetorical devices, ways of presenting information in informational texts, artistic forms in literary texts, etc.

According to teachers, students need to proactively read more texts of the same genre they have learned to gain more practical experience.

The literary essay section is now worth only 2 points, requiring you to write a paragraph (previously 4 points, requiring you to write a complete essay). Each person's ability to perceive literature is different, not to mention partly due to talent. Therefore, a score of 2 will be more suitable for the majority of students. In addition, students also need to equip themselves with the skills to do the test carefully, the question does not require analysis of the entire work but only requires discussion of a certain aspect.

The most important part is writing a social argumentative essay. Previously, there were two types of essays: an argumentative essay about an idea or moral, and an argumentative essay about an event or phenomenon in life. These types of essays are more or less related to the two types of essays that will appear in the exam: an argumentative essay about a life issue or an argumentative essay about a problem that needs to be solved. You can refer to the ideas of essays written in the two old types, but you need to be selective because the skills, techniques, and requirements of the essay have changed a lot.

Previously, according to the announcement of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the structure of the 10th grade literature exam in 2026, in the reading-comprehension section, the source of quotations will be materials outside of textbooks. The type of text will be literary text and one of two types of argumentative text or informational text. The total length of the materials in the exam will not exceed 1,300 words.

The basis for assessing literature is the reading and writing requirements in the 2018 General Education Program - literature at secondary school level, mainly grades 8 and 9.
