Empathetic calmness, human kindness, and faith – these are arguably the three most important pillars of the current social mindset. They are also the requirements and mission that revolutionary journalism must build and deliver to the broad public and the people. The message, "journalism must make society calmer and kinder," is concise and simple, yet reflects a very new, profound, and urgently realistic way of thinking.
The reality is that the rapid development of social media and online platforms has "swept away" the attention of a large segment of the public, with approximately 110 million Vietnamese social media accounts, according to the latest statistics.
Besides useful information and knowledge, as the Party and State leaders have pointed out: "The online environment also makes information life more complex, easily influenced by fleeting emotions, misinformation, algorithm manipulation, and deliberate information dissemination activities."
Fake news, misinformation, ambiguity, fabricated images and audio, AI-generated content, copyright infringement, cyberattacks, and data theft are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Misinformation can spread far before the truth can be verified.
"The practice of selectively editing statements can damage the reputation of individuals and organizations, and even affect the people's trust in the policies of the Party and the State..." (excerpt from the article "Vietnamese Revolutionary Journalism in the Digital Age" by General Secretary and President To Lam - Tien Phong newspaper, June 19, 2026).
Malicious information manipulation on social media is the reason many people lose the composure necessary to consider an event, an image, a story... More broadly, it activates and manipulates angry crowds simply because of false, unverified, or maliciously manipulated information and images.
This shows that the role of journalism today is not only to provide information, but also to become a trusted source for the entire society, a place where people can turn to understand the truth, to receive kind, heartwarming, and humane stories…
Here's the situation: Da Nang city is setting a new goal of becoming a "City of 5 Highs": High level of knowledge, high level of culture, high level of income, high level of governance, and high standard of living.
On Journalist's Day, a local journalist colleague asked me what role, position, and responsibility the press has in contributing to the city's achievement of this goal?
I replied concisely: Journalism must reach the sixth "high" level: High in cognitive thinking, in the skill of grasping and reflecting reality, in understanding, empathy, and human values, and in accurate and timely critical analysis...
Only by improving itself can journalism fulfill its crucial mission in this new era.
