Voice of the People and Public Opinion
The history of Vietnamese press has proven that, from the early days of the revolution until now, the press has always accompanied the nation, been an honest voice, reflecting all aspects of social life. The press not only reports on brilliant achievements and positive changes, but also courageously points out shortcomings, problems, and thorny issues that need to be solved. This is the important factor that creates the critical power of the press.
Social criticism through the press is the process of receiving, analyzing and reflecting the voices and legitimate aspirations of the people. These are heartfelt contributions of opinions on policies and laws; concerns about social evils, negativity, corruption; concerns about economic , cultural, educational, health issues, etc. By listening to and transmitting this information, the press creates a two-way communication channel between the people and the authorities at all levels, helping Party and State leaders promptly grasp the thoughts and aspirations of the masses, thereby making appropriate and practical decisions.
A high-quality, highly critical article is not simply “looking for the bad in the leaves” but is a profound, multi-dimensional, scientifically- based analysis, aiming to provide constructive solutions. It is not only a “report” on the current situation, but also a “suggestion” for the future. When the press performs this role well, it will create a positive public opinion, aiming at the values of truth, goodness and beauty, fighting against evil and backwardness, while at the same time encouraging and promoting advanced models and good actions. The spread of healthy public opinion will create a certain pressure, urging the authorities to intervene, thoroughly and completely solving the problem, contributing to a healthy social environment.
Promoting social consensus
In a diverse and complex society, social consensus is a key factor in maintaining stability and development. The press, with its ability to disseminate information quickly and widely, plays an important role in building and consolidating this consensus. When the press reflects honestly, objectively and responsibly on social issues, it will help all people better understand the difficulties and challenges that the country is facing, as well as the efforts and determination of the Party and State in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.
Especially in the context of globalization and information explosion as today, when conflicting information, even false and distorted information can easily spread, the role of the mainstream press becomes more important than ever. The press provides accurate information and guides public opinion, helping people distinguish right from wrong, and identify the plots of hostile forces to divide the great national unity bloc. By protecting the truth and exposing distorted arguments, the press contributes to maintaining political and social stability, creating a favorable environment for development.
Strengthening people's trust in the Party
The new era places higher demands on the role of the press in strengthening trust between the Party and the People. Trust is an invaluable asset, an endogenous strength that helps the country overcome all difficulties and challenges. When the press performs well in its role of social criticism, it will directly contribute to strengthening this trust. On the one hand, when the press courageously speaks out against violations and negativity in the apparatus, against acts of harassment and abuse of power by a number of cadres and Party members, it demonstrates the Party's determination in the process of rectification, self-criticism and criticism. People will see that the Party truly listens, truly acts to clean up the apparatus, and protect the legitimate interests of the People. This further strengthens trust in the Party's leadership, in the path that the Party and the People have chosen.
On the other hand, the press is also an effective channel to convey the Party's correct policies and guidelines, and outstanding achievements in the renovation process. When people have full and transparent access to information about the Party's efforts in improving people's lives, developing the economy, and maintaining national independence and sovereignty, they will have more confidence in the Party's leadership. The shining examples and advanced models in studying, working, and producing discovered and spread by the press contribute to creating a positive source of energy, strengthening the belief in the bright future of the country.
However, to fulfill this role well, the press also needs to improve itself. That requires the team of journalists to always maintain political will, professional ethics, and constantly improve their professional skills. Each journalist must be a soldier on the ideological and cultural front, always dedicated to the profession, bravely fighting for the truth, for justice, for the interests of the people and the country. At the same time, there must be a mechanism to encourage and protect brave and honest journalists in the process of carrying out the mission of social criticism.
In the new era, the role of the press in social criticism is not only an inevitable requirement but also an important driving force for building a fair, democratic and civilized society. By becoming the voice of the people, creating positive public opinion and promoting consensus, the press contributes significantly to strengthening and consolidating the trust between the Party and the people, creating a combined strength for our country to rise strongly and steadily on the path of development.
