In Group A, South Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1, securing their first win at the 2026 World Cup. Despite high expectations from fans, captain Son Heung-min had an ineffective performance.
After Son was substituted in the 69th minute, My Daily commented: "Unbelievable, Son looked lost. He took five shots but still couldn't score. As a result, Son had to be substituted."
In its article, the South Korean newspaper argued that Son was not in top form in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup. If the LAFC striker had been more clinical with his chances, South Korea could have actually scored the opening goal in the first half.

Meanwhile, Best Eleven pointed out that midfielder Hwang In-beom was the one who stole the spotlight from Son in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup. The Feyenoord player shone with a goal and an assist, helping South Korea secure all three points.
FotMob gave Son a 7 out of 10 rating after nearly 70 minutes of play against the Czech Republic. The LAFC striker only managed one shot on target and missed a golden opportunity when one-on-one with the opposing goalkeeper.
Before the match, Son made history in South Korean football as the second player to participate in four World Cups. This achievement puts him on par with the legendary Hong Myung-bo, who is also currently the head coach of the South Korean national team.
After the first round of matches, South Korea is temporarily ranked second in Group A, behind host nation Mexico due to an inferior goal difference.
