Spanish striker Ilkay Gundogan scored the winning goal from the penalty spot, helping Barcelona beat hosts Las Palmas 2-1 in the 19th round of La Liga on the evening of January 4th.
Barca got off to a poor start away against a team currently ranked 10th. In the 12th minute, Sandro Ramirez crossed the ball into the penalty area for Munir El Haddadi to score with his left foot, giving Las Palmas the lead. Ramirez and El Haddadi both came through the La Masia academy and had stints with Barca's first team, but were not retained.
For the remainder of the first half, Barca continued to play poorly. Xavi's team lacked ideas and were unable to create any shots on goal against Las Palmas. Meanwhile, the home team moved the ball well whenever they had the chance.

However, after the break, Barca played completely differently. The reigning La Liga champions attacked faster and had more shots on goal. In the 55th minute, taking advantage of the chaos in the Las Palmas penalty area, Sergi Roberto passed to Ferran Torres who scored the equalizer.
Barca continued to press forward in pursuit of three points. From the 72nd minute, noticing Las Palmas' declining fitness, Xavi repeatedly brought on Lamine Yamal, Joao Felix, and Vitor Roque to replace Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Torres. This allowed the Barca forwards to find space behind the home team's defense.
Meanwhile, Las Palmas resorted to fouling to stop the defending champions. The referee issued five yellow cards and one red card to Las Palmas, while Barca only received three yellow cards.

In the 90+3 minute, the turning point of the match occurred. The home team's defender fouled Gundogan inside the penalty area, and the referee awarded Barca a penalty. Gundogan himself converted the penalty to seal a 2-1 victory.
With this result, Barca finished the first half of La Liga with 41 points. They are in third place, seven points behind Real Madrid and Girona.
