On September 5th, Mr. Le Trong Phuc, chairman of the People's Committee of Ia Dom commune ( Gia Lai province), confirmed that a mass food poisoning incident involving students due to eating toad meat had recently occurred.
The incident occurred on September 3rd in Mook Trang village, Ia Dom commune. The victims were nine Jarai students aged 10-14, residing in the village.
According to initial investigations, while their parents were away working in the fields, the children conspired to kidnap a frog, butcher it, prepare it, and eat it.
After eating toad meat, the group of students exhibited symptoms of poisoning such as nausea, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, numbness of the lips and tongue, and fatigue.
Upon receiving the report, the commune authorities, in coordination with the local police, took the children to the commune's health station for first aid and then transferred them to the Gia Lai Provincial Children's Hospital for treatment.
Dr. Dang Huu Chien, director of Gia Lai Provincial Children's Hospital, reported that two patients have been discharged so far, and the remaining children are in stable condition, are being monitored, and will be discharged in the next few days.
According to Doctor Chien, fortunately, the children suffered mild poisoning and their lives were not in danger.
Following the incident, the chairman of the Ia Dom commune People's Committee said that officials had been sent to Mook Trang village to raise awareness among residents about the dangers of eating toad meat.
