Betting scandal rocks NBA

Perhaps the NBA has never faced such a major shock before.

The league, once considered a symbol of professionalism, where icons like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James were celebrated, is now engulfed in a historic scandal. The three names recently arrested by the FBI – Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier, and Damon Jones – are not just misguided individuals, but also embodies a problem deeply rooted in modern basketball: the destructive power of money and gambling.

Chauncey Billups, the 2004 NBA champion and head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, once known as "Mr. Big Shot" for his cool demeanor on the court, has become the central figure in a nationwide investigation. According to ESPN , he is accused of involvement in an illegal gambling ring linked to the Italian mafia – a scenario previously thought to be straight out of 1980s crime films.

More significantly, the incident occurred just one round into the 2025/26 season, and Billups was still on the sidelines directing his players when the FBI planned his arrest.

Terry Rozier, a guard at the Miami Heat, was also arrested at a hotel in Orlando, just hours after his team's opening game loss. Another former player, Damon Jones, who played for several NBA teams, was also named. Three individuals, three generations, were caught up in a dark network that the FBI claims "spans 11 states and involves more than 30 people."

According to FBI Director Kash Patel, this is a "historic" case involving charges ranging from telecommunications fraud, money laundering, and extortion to illegal gambling. He described it as follows: "We're talking about tens of millions of dollars manipulated through gambling, theft, and fraud spanning many years."

And the name behind it? "La Cosa Nostra" - the infamous Italian mafia organization, along with the four Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese families.

NBA anh 1

The image of the NBA is under threat.

If these allegations are proven, it would be the worst stain on the reputation of referee Tim Donaghy in 2007. But unlike Donaghy – a single individual – this incident touches on the deeper levels of the league, where coaches, players, and former stars are all involved. It raises a serious question: has the NBA lost control in the face of the betting frenzy, where every shot, every rebound can now be tied to millions of dollars in bets on online platforms?

American basketball, once a source of national cultural pride, is facing a deep and lasting ethical rift. For years, the NBA has allowed legal betting companies to sponsor, advertise, and even become "strategic partners." This legalization has blurred the lines between business and crime. When money becomes the focus, the values of the sport are pushed to the sidelines.

Billups, who once taught his students about "willpower and honor," now faces charges that could end his career. Rozier, a player once renowned for his fighting spirit, is now branded as having "gambled with the very sport that sustained him." And Damon Jones—an icon of the old generation—becomes a bridge between the past and the present in a case that hints at a "network of iniquity."

Until now, the NBA, the Blazers, and the Heat have remained silent. But that silence is a wake-up call. When the numbers from the betting odds are louder than the clatter of shoes on the court, the question is no longer who wins or loses – it's who still believes.

The Billups–Rozier–Jones affair may just be the tip of the iceberg threatening to shatter the NBA's image. Because once a sport loses its integrity, every victory becomes meaningless. And when trust is lost, no shot – no matter how accurate – can restore American basketball to its former purity.
