The mystery of the camera shutter sound on Japanese iPhones.

There are no written regulations mandating the addition of a camera shutter sound to phones sold in Japan. This is simply a standard practice that has been adopted as a default.

In Vietnam, mobile phones imported from Japanese carriers were once popular due to their low prices. However, one of the distinguishing features of phones from this market is the default camera shutter sound, which cannot be turned off. According to CNET Japan , this option appears on most smartphones sold in that market. However, few people pay attention to the reason for its adoption and when it became widespread.

In Vietnam, this feature is explained through word of mouth as a regulation imposed by the market where the device is sold. Japan has a higher priority on privacy than other countries. However, this view is inaccurate.

According to CNET , ever since the camera function became available on phones, concerns about surreptitious photography arose in Japan. At the time, mobile carriers, the main phone sellers in the country, tried to appease criticism by adding a shutter sound.

"There are no specific laws. Nor are there any regulations from industry associations. This is a self-regulatory function in the manufacturing sector. Companies have the freedom to do so, but they all choose a more publicized approach when taking photos," said the CEO of a Japanese phone company.

An employee with 20 years of experience in this field shared that even in Japan, there are many theories about this feature. There was a time when authorities issued a request, which was approved by the manufacturer. This wasn't a mandatory law, but the standards sent by carriers to manufacturers included adding a shutter sound to the camera.

Over time, it became the default, adopted by foreign mobile phone companies such as Samsung, Apple, and Google on devices sold in Japan.

Sony's recently launched product is proof that there are no mandatory regulations regarding camera shutter sounds. Specifically, the company allows users to completely mute the sound on Xperia phones without a physical SIM card. CNET suggests that as cameras become more important, adding shutter sound muting features will become more common in Japan.

Furthermore, even within this country, there are people who look to buy imported phones, mainly from the US and Canada. Smartphones, especially iPhones, from these countries are no different from those sold in Japan. Additionally, they can disable the annoying camera shutter sound.
