Unleash your creativity.
Old jeans, seemingly destined for the trash, have been "revived" in the form of fashionable handbags and unique, charming hair clips. This is the idea of Nguyen Yen Nhi, a student at the University of Arts, Hue University, who wants to create unique accessory collections that only she possesses. Instead of letting old jeans fall into oblivion, Yen Nhi has been diligently sewing and repurposing them into creative and useful products, contributing to environmental protection.
Yen Nhi shared: “I personally really like clothes made of denim fabric because of their practicality. Having to throw away old, outdated jeans that I no longer wear makes me feel very sad. That's why I thought, why not transform them into items with other uses, while also reducing waste in the environment?”
For Yen Nhi, cutting and stitching a bag from a pair of pants takes much longer than cutting from a whole piece of fabric or a complete pair of pants. However, besides the challenge of self-improvement in creativity, the fact that no good fabric is wasted makes her feel very happy and fulfilled.
Like Yen Nhi, Nguyen Minh Trang ( Hue University of Education) also has a passion for handicrafts. Minh Trang shared that she became interested in recycling denim after participating in a program promoting the reduction of fashion waste. Aware of the serious harm caused by fashion waste, Minh Trang came up with ideas and learned from online videos to recycle old items into bags and wallets according to her own preferences.
“The fashion products are entirely made through my own trial and error and self-study. To create the products, I have to collect many kinds of old jeans, but still in good condition, from relatives and friends... After washing them clean, I will select details on those items such as pockets, belt loops, and hems to keep. This part will create a unique highlight for my products. The most difficult but also most exciting step is when I piece the fabric scraps together harmoniously and beautifully,” Minh Trang confided.
Spreading the message for the environment.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Cong Tin, Head of the Environmental Science Department, Hue University of Science , the Earth receives a huge amount of waste every day (approximately 3.5 million tons). This number will continue to increase exponentially and reach 11 million tons/day by the end of the 21st century, seriously threatening the environment. Furthermore, waste is the cause of numerous negative impacts on ecosystems and human health.
Aware of the harmful effects of fashion waste on the environment, Yen Nhi, Minh Trang, and many other young people who love recycling denim also want to spread positive messages and actions to others. Not only do they recycle accessories from old denim, but the two young women also create videos instructing others on how to sew backpacks, handbags, hair ties, etc., so that other young people can learn and follow along.
“Some people say recycling contributes to environmental protection, but I don’t think that’s entirely true. Because any production and consumption process affects the environment, including recycling. But humans can’t stop producing and consuming. I pursue recycling – a job I love – with the hope of making a small contribution to improving the environment, and also because of my passion and personal feelings,” Yen Nhi shared.
