On the morning of July 3, Ho Chi Minh City Club officially confirmed that it would part ways with coach Phung Thanh Phuong after the 2024/25 season. “Ho Chi Minh City Club would like to express its sincere thanks to coach Phung Thanh Phuong for his dedicated contributions and support to the team over the past time,” the club’s homepage wrote.

This is a decision that leaves many regrets for Ho Chi Minh City football fans, especially when coach Phung Thanh Phuong helped the team successfully stay in the league in the 2024/25 season. Under his leadership, the "Red Battleship" finished in 10th place with 28 points. Last season, coach Phung Thanh Phuong even helped Ho Chi Minh City Club finish in 4th place on the rankings.

According to many sources, Coach Phung Thanh Phuong left Ho Chi Minh City Club due to the issue of qualifications. After this information, a series of speculations appeared surrounding the head coach position of the "Red Battleship", especially when former player Lee Nguyen suddenly appeared in the stands of Thong Nhat Stadium during the play-off match between Da Nang and Binh Phuoc on June 27.

However, the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City Club denied this rumor. “We did not invite Lee Nguyen to be the coach or assistant coach. The team is in the process of negotiating with a coach from Spain. If it is completed, the club will announce it in the near future,” the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City Club informed the media.

According to the investigation, Lee Nguyen only visited Ho Chi Minh City for about a week and will soon return to the US. His attendance at the play-off match was simply a visit to friends and old teammates.

Thus, after Ninh Binh , Ho Chi Minh City FC may be the next team in the V.League to put their trust in a coach from Spain. Although there is no official identity, this is considered a move showing that the Southern team wants to renew its tactical thinking and aim for a more modern playing style in the coming seasons.
