Portuguese Football Federation speaks out on Diogo Jota case

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) sent condolences after striker Diogo Jota died in a car accident in Spain on the morning of July 3 (local time).

On its official account, the FPF wrote: "The entire Portuguese football community is saddened by the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in Spain this morning. Jota was not only an excellent player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents. He was a role model in the country's football community."

The FPF also asked UEFA to hold a minute's silence before the national team's match against Spain at the Euro 2025 women's tournament on July 3.

"We have lost two champions. Their departure is an irreparable loss for Portuguese football. We will do everything we can to honor their legacy every day," the FPF added.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro shared on X: "The news of the passing of Diogo Jota, an athlete who brought glory to Portugal, and his brother is unexpected and tragic. I send my deepest condolences to the family. Today is a sad day for football as well as for national and international sport ."

According to Marca , Jota's accident occurred at km 65 near Sanabria, Zamora province, northwestern Spain. Witnesses at the scene said the car carrying Jota and his brother Andre suddenly lost control, went off the road and caught fire. When rescuers arrived, both victims had no chance of survival.

The news of Jota's departure has shocked the football world. Born in 1996 in Porto, Jota is one of the outstanding players of the new generation of Portuguese football.
