Leaving the city for the countryside because of a passion for mushroom cultivation.

Despite having a stable job with a relatively high salary in Nha Trang, Mr. Nguyen Huu Chon (Nam village, Nam Ninh Hoa commune) returned to his hometown to cultivate mushrooms, making positive contributions to the local movement of skilled farmers. Mr. Chon is one of the Party members and farmers recommended by the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department to the Central Committee as an exemplary figure in studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, ethics, and style, to participate in the "Simple yet Noble Examples" exhibition in 2026.

Looking at the mushroom farm spanning 3,000 square meters, few would guess that Mr. Chơn...   He once took a bold turn. Before 2019, Mr. Chơn was a skilled worker at a large enterprise in Nha Trang. However, he resigned and returned to his hometown to plant trees. "Although I was a technical worker, I had a passion for plants. Perhaps it was thanks to my childhood years growing up in the countryside and being closely connected to the green of trees. I kept thinking that I could get rich on my homeland," Mr. Chơn shared.

But deciding what to plant and in what direction was a major concern for him. He then decided to go to Dong Nai province to learn from experienced growers. For many months, he worked at large mushroom farms, learning everything from selecting sawdust and preparing substrates to inoculating with spawn and hanging racks. Returning to Nam Ninh Hoa commune with theoretical knowledge and some practical experience, Mr. Chon began building his first mushroom house. To invest in a farm of about 50 square meters, he had to scramble to raise 70 million dong. Capital was a challenge, but for him, the will to work hard and refuse to accept poverty and hardship was the greatest asset a farmer could have.

“There are many types of mushrooms, each with its own characteristics. White oyster mushrooms can be grown year-round; reishi mushrooms are heat-tolerant and are usually grown during the hot season; while abalone mushrooms are mainly grown from after August to around February each year,” Mr. Chơn said. He also improved his mushroom cultivation methods, experimenting with various roofing materials, from thatched roofs, corrugated iron roofs, fiber cement to PE plastic roofs, to find the optimal environment for mushroom growth. Instead of using traditional iron racks, he designed a system of hanging wires suspended from the ceiling to support the mushroom substrate bags. This change makes the farm more airy, with even air circulation, significantly reducing heat buildup during the hot season. Thanks to his diligence, hard work, and scientific approach , each substrate bag at the farm yields an average of 200 grams of high-quality fresh mushrooms. With a stable wholesale price of around 50,000 VND/kg at Ninh Hoa market and surrounding areas, the model began to generate income. To date, after nearly 7 years of perseverance and expansion, his mushroom farm has grown to a scale of 3,000 ^m² , bringing in an average revenue of nearly 1 billion VND per year for his family.

Not only has he enriched himself, but Mr. Chơn also wholeheartedly guides farmer members both within and outside the commune who want to learn his model, from farm construction techniques to care methods. He also proactively takes responsibility for purchasing products from several households, helping them confidently switch to different crops and increase their income. His farm currently provides stable employment for 4-5 local workers. Because of his dedication, reputation, and practical contributions to the movement of successful farmers and businesspeople in the locality, Mr. Chơn was trusted and elected as the Party Secretary of Nam village and recently elected by the people and voters in the commune as a representative of the Nam Ninh Hoa Commune People's Council for the 2026-2031 term.

Ms. Hoang Thi Hoa, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Nam Ninh Hoa commune, commented: " Mr. Nguyen Huu Chon is a prime example of learning from and following President Ho Chi Minh's example in terms of hard work and determination. He has independently risen to success, building a mushroom cultivation model that yields high economic efficiency, contributing to the spread of the movement of skilled farmers in production and business in the locality.
