Despite having a fairly strong squad, including star players like goalkeeper Ederson and other big names such as Ayrton Lucas, Marquinhos, Eder Militao, Danilo, Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Vinicius Junior, Lucas Paqueta, Malcom, and Richarlison, the team in their familiar yellow and green jerseys suffered a 2-4 defeat against the African representative.
The Brazilian players were sad after the defeat.
Interim coach Ramon Menezes deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation with Richarlison playing as the lone striker. Brazil started confidently and controlled possession as they had in previous matches. Their dominance allowed the South American side to open the scoring in the 11th minute through midfielder Lucas Paqueta. After a disappointing start, Senegal played well and fought back strongly after falling behind. In a fast-paced attack, Habib Diallo equalized for the African side, making it 1-1.
At the start of the second half, a goal from Sadio Mane, along with an own goal from defender Marquinhos, gave Senegal a 3-1 lead. Although Marquinhos redeemed himself by scoring to reduce the deficit to 2-3, Mane sealed the victory for Brazil with a penalty in the seventh minute of added time, making it 4-2. Clearly, without Neymar, Brazil lacked enthusiasm and appeared somewhat weak.
Senegal (in blue) played well in their victory over Brazil.
This defeat shows that the Brazilian Football Confederation was very wise to reach an agreement with coach Carlo Ancelotti early on, allowing this highly successful coach to lead the Seleção in 2024.
