Frustration… petty theft

Báo Thừa Thiên HuếBáo Thừa Thiên Huế07/06/2023

One afternoon in late May 2023, two strangers on a motorbike climbed over the fence, attempting to steal a cage containing a beautiful-singing silver-cheeked thrush belonging to Mr. Ty A, residing in Phu Thuong ward ( Hue City).

Fortunately, Ty A's family and neighbors noticed in time, so the two strangers got into their car and fled. Learning from this experience, Ty A hung his birdcage and his thrush more carefully. In reality, not everyone is as lucky as Ty A.

Recently, a resident in An Cuu ward (Hue City) was robbed by two young men on a motorbike who, taking advantage of midday, sneaked into his yard and stole his pet magpie and its cage. After reviewing security camera footage, the resident identified the license plate and reported the incident to the An Cuu Ward Police.

“Taking advantage of the midday heat when the gate wasn't lowered, two young men on a motorbike sped straight into the yard, grabbed a stack of stainless steel chairs, and escaped. The family only realized this when they checked the security camera footage,” said Mr. Nguyen XT, a resident whose business in Vy Da ward (Hue City) was burglarized.

"There's nothing they won't steal. Items worth a few hundred thousand dong are even easier for them to take and sell," a resident of Thuy Van ward (Hue City) said.

Besides petty theft, during these hot days, criminals have also taken advantage of people's carelessness to steal property.

Earlier, at 5:30 AM on May 22, 2023, Hoang MT (born in 1994), residing in Thuan Hoa Ward (Hue City), was driving a motorbike looking for houses with lax security to steal property. Upon arriving at house number 190 on Ton That Thiep Street, Tay Loc Ward (Hue City), T. noticed the house was unlocked and had a low fence. He climbed over the fence, broke into the house, stole two valuable mobile phones, and quickly escaped.

Upon receiving a report from the victim, the Criminal Investigation Team of Hue City Police quickly coordinated with Tay Loc Ward Police to organize a force to verify and track down the suspect. By 3 PM the same day, the criminal investigation team had identified and arrested T., recovering the stolen goods.

To prevent and combat property theft, the Hue City Police recommend that residents check and lock their doors carefully before going to bed or leaving the house. Currently, during the hot season, people often open windows, vents, and side doors, so it is crucial to be vigilant to prevent thieves from climbing stairs or fences to break into homes and steal property.

Talking to many residents, petty theft is nothing new and is considered a minor issue. However, without solutions and decisive action from the police force, it becomes a serious problem. People are hesitant to report minor thefts to the police for coordinated action.

What the people need most is, in addition to their cooperation, for the police force to be more "enthusiastic" in handling reports and denunciations of crimes so that the perpetrators can be quickly identified and severely punished according to the law.

Local Party committees and authorities need to regularly assign forces to coordinate with ward and commune police to patrol, monitor, and closely follow the situation in order to prevent and address this problem, ensuring peace and security for the people's lives.

People need to raise their awareness and absolutely not be complacent or negligent, even in the smallest matters. Petty theft shouldn't be considered a minor issue. Just one moment of carelessness or complacency, and criminals will steal your property, affecting your life. From small items, it can become larger assets, so people need to be more vigilant.
