In a recent televised address, Minister Somse stated that these cases had been detected at two health centers, Bimbo and M'baiki, in the southwestern region of the country. The official announced that the first suspected cases were recorded on June 14th at the Bimbo health center. To date, health authorities have identified 197 cases, including 24 deaths, representing a mortality rate of approximately 12.2%.
Minister Somse urged the public to remain calm but to strictly adhere to hygiene and disease prevention measures. He stated that thanks to timely medical interventions, no further deaths have been recorded among patients being treated in medical facilities or monitored in the community.
Cholera is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, primarily transmitted through contaminated water or food. In severe cases, the disease has a sudden onset with severe, watery diarrhea, possibly accompanied by vomiting, leading to rapid dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Without timely rehydration and treatment, patients can go into shock, experience multiple organ failure, and die within a short period. Health experts advise people to use clean water, cook food thoroughly, boil water before drinking, wash hands frequently with soap, and seek medical attention immediately if any suspicious symptoms appear for prompt treatment.
