This is the second fatal shark attack in Australia this May.

The man was brought ashore after being attacked by a shark near Kennedy Shoal – a shallow coral reef about 45 kilometers off the coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia – a Queensland Police spokesperson said.

The man was reached by ambulance but died shortly afterward. The victim's identity has not yet been released.

Police Chief Elaine Burns said the 39-year-old man was scuba diving from a boat at Kennedy Shoal off the southern Cairns coast of Queensland with three friends when he was attacked by a shark.

"The man was spearfishing when he was attacked by a shark and died from severe head injuries," Ms. Burns told reporters.

The victim was transported by boat to the tourist town of Hull Heads around midday on May 24 (local time), where paramedics were waiting. A statement from the local emergency services said he was injured but could not be saved.

Kennedy Shoal is a shallow coral reef that attracts many recreational anglers. Scuba divers are also drawn to the 19th-century shipwreck of the Lady Bowen.

Fishermen reported seeing bull sharks in the area before the attack occurred.

This fatal shark attack follows the death of a 38-year-old man. A shark attacked and killed spearfisher Steve Mattabonni on May 16th at a reef off Rottnest Island near the southwest coast of Western Australia.

According to data from conservation groups, there are approximately 20 shark attacks in Australia each year, but most are not fatal. The country has recorded an average of more than three fatal shark attacks per year in recent decades. The latest incident marks the third shark-related death in Australia in 2026.

Dozens of beaches along Australia's east coast, including those in Sydney, were closed in January this year after four shark attacks in just two days. These attacks occurred after heavy rains created murky waters that attracted sharks and reduced their visibility.
