App Tracking Transparency – a feature introduced by Apple on iPhones starting with iOS 14.5 (2020) – allows users to control which apps are allowed to track their activity or not. Tracking allows apps to obtain data about user usage and location, which can be sent to advertisers, or, more dangerously, poses a risk of data leakage if it falls into the hands of third parties.
All iPhones running iOS 14.5 or later can enable or disable the tracking blocker feature for all apps or individual programs. To use this useful feature most effectively, users can follow one of the two methods below.
For applications newly installed on the device
When you first download and install an application on your phone, the system will display a notification asking for permission to track your activity, along with details about what types of data the developer may collect. To avoid being bothered and to prevent security risks, users should refuse permission by selecting the " Ask App not to Track" option.
App Tracking Transparency is a useful feature that should be enabled on iPhones.
To avoid repeating this process in future app installations, users should go to: Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and then toggle the " Allow Apps to Request to Track" switch to Off (grayed out). This will automatically deny any new apps permission to track the user's activity and information. Apps that have been previously granted permission will not be affected.
For applications that were already installed on the device.
Users can disable tracking permissions for individual apps as needed by accessing the following path: Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking . Here, you will find a list of programs that have requested to collect information about the user's activity. To block tracking for a specific app, simply toggle the corresponding switch to Off .
An important point to note is that blocking apps from tracking activity doesn't mean developers are completely out of ways to collect user information; it only helps limit targeted advertising campaigns, making them less precise. Users will still see ads, but they will mostly be generic and not tailored to their specific needs. Meanwhile, developers still have many other tools to gather information about potential customers.
To minimize advertising, users should be cautious while using software, browsing the web, etc., to reduce the likelihood of their behavior and habits being tracked.
