According to Tom's Guide , Microsoft's bringing GPT-4-Turbo to Copilot means users will get a free ChatGPT Plus experience, allowing for more complex queries and responses.
Copilot is provided by Microsoft completely free of charge.
The highlight of GPT-4-Turbo is that it has an updated knowledge base compared to previous versions, with information up to April 2023, as well as a much larger 128k context window, equivalent to 300 pages of text. Meanwhile, the data for basic GPT-4 is up to September 2021, a year before ChatGPT was released. It has a 32k context window, so it will forget what the user said after about 100 pages of text.
Another significant change in GPT-4-Turbo is improved image analysis and increased inference capabilities. This leads to better problem solving. OpenAI notes on its blog: "GPT-4 Turbo outperforms our previous models on tasks that require careful instruction following."
Users need to enable "Use GPT-4" in the Copilot interface
Copilot is available across multiple Microsoft products and services, including Windows 11, Microsoft 365, and standalone apps for iOS and Android. However, to get the GPT-4-Turbo experience, users will have to do a bit of work.
First of all, Microsoft hasn't officially announced GPT-4-Turbo is available in Copilot, but they did say in December 2023 that the AI engine will be upgraded regularly. The upgrade essentially happens silently in the background for some users, meaning it only works when the user has GPT-4 enabled. This can be done in the Copilot interface by enabling "Use GPT-4."
