Improving Livelihoods for Ethnic Minorities

On June 5, the Project Management Board “Improving the Livelihoods of Ethnic Minorities in Son La Province through Agriculture and Nutrition Improvement” held an interdisciplinary meeting with a number of departments and agencies; the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center; the Project Implementation Board of Sop Cop and Bac Yen districts; and representatives of Save the Children International (SCI).

Inter-sectoral meeting of the Project “Improving the Livelihoods of Ethnic Minorities in Son La Province through Agriculture and Improved Nutrition”.

The project, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan through Save the Children International in Vietnam, was received by the People's Committee of Son La province and will be implemented from July 2023 to March 30, 2026. The project will be implemented in the communes of Muong Va, Sam Kha, Pung Banh (Sop Cop district); Chim Van, Lang Cheu, Xim Vang (Bac Yen district). The project aims to improve the livelihoods of ethnic minorities through agricultural production, focusing on gender equality, food security and improving nutrition for mothers and children.

The project consists of three components: agriculture, nutrition and policy advocacy. After nearly two years of implementation, 67 training courses on livestock farming techniques, vegetable growing, production group management skills, and business negotiations have been organized with more than 1,000 participants. Support for more than 1,000 households and 30 production groups was provided with 24,450 poultry and livestock breeds and more than 5,100 packages of various vegetable seeds.

Organized 11 training courses on maternal and child nutrition care and communication skills to change maternal and child nutrition care behaviors for 200 people. Conducted 246 prenatal check-ups at commune health stations and households; more than 10,800 children under 2 years old were weighed. Established and operated 35 nutrition rehabilitationeducation centers in 47 villages, with more than 3,300 malnourished children participating.

At the meeting, delegates discussed and pointed out difficulties in implementing 6 rural traffic works in communes under the project so that people can benefit; evaluating the effectiveness of the activities; coordination between units during the implementation process. Speaking at the meeting, the representative of the Provincial Project Management Board acknowledged and accepted the recommendations and proposals of the delegates to coordinate with relevant agencies and units to implement solutions to remove difficulties to continue effectively implementing the project in the coming time.
