The increasing rate of iPhone theft is creating opportunities for new forms of fraud. Although Apple has equipped its devices with strong security features, especially Activation Lock, to render them unusable if lost, criminals are still finding ways to bypass it.
According to the Swiss National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), they are using a new tactic: sending fake Apple messages, announcing that a lost iPhone has been found.
These messages, which often contain precise device details (such as model and color) to build trust, will lead users to a fake website.
Their goal is to trick the owner into entering their Apple ID information. If successful, they can gain access, disable Activation Lock, and wipe the device clean in order to resell it.
The NCSC stated that criminals can obtain details from the phone itself or the contact number that the user leaves on the Lost Mode screen.
To protect users, the NCSC has outlined five key rules that must be followed.
The first and most important rule is to ignore these messages. Apple insists they never contact you via text message or email to inform you that a device has been found.
Secondly, never click on links or enter your Apple ID login information from messages sent from unknown sources.
Third, if the device is lost, users must act immediately by activating Lost Mode through the Find My app or the iCloud website.
Fourth, be cautious about the contact information displayed on the lock screen. In particular, never remove the device from your Apple account, as this will disable Activation Lock.
Finally, always use a PIN for your SIM card. This simple measure will prevent criminals from accessing your phone number to carry out scams.
