The rise in iPhone theft is creating opportunities for new forms of fraud. Despite Apple's strong security features, notably Activation Lock, which renders a device useless if lost, criminals are still finding ways to bypass them.
According to the Swiss National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), they are using a new trick: sending fake Apple messages, announcing that the lost iPhone has been found.
These messages, which often contain exact device details (like model, color) to instill trust, will lead the user to a fake website.
Their goal is to trick the owner into entering their Apple ID information. If successful, they can gain access, disable Activation Lock, and wipe the device for resale.
Criminals can get details from the phone itself or contact numbers left on the Lost Mode screen, the NCSC said.
To protect users, the NCSC has set out five key rules to follow.
The first and most important rule is to ignore these messages. Apple claims they never contact you to tell you that your device has been found via text message or email.
Second, never click on links or enter your Apple ID login information from messages from unknown sources.
Third, if the device is lost, the user must act immediately by activating Lost Mode through the Find My app or the iCloud website.
Fourth, be careful with the contact information displayed on the lock screen. In particular, never remove the device from your Apple account, as this will disable Activation Lock.
Finally, always use a PIN code on your SIM card. This simple measure will prevent criminals from accessing your phone number to commit fraud.
