Carrick and Manchester United secured an important victory against Brentford.

Manchester United continued their close pursuit of a Champions League spot after a crucial victory against Brentford in the early hours of April 28th. The Old Trafford side took a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko.

However, Brentford created considerable pressure in the first 45 minutes. Recognizing the problem, interim manager Michael Carrick decided to adjust the system after the break.

He substituted Amad Diallo, brought on Noussair Mazraoui, and switched Manchester United to a three-centre-back formation. Mazraoui played alongside Ayden Heaven and Harry Maguire, while Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw occupied the flanks.

This change helped MU better control the opponent's attacks. Brentford could only score a consolation goal in the 87th minute through Mathias Jensen, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide.

Commenting on Sky Sports , legend Gary Neville said Carrick was being very pragmatic. He called it a "clever" decision, because Carrick was using the 5-2-3 system previously used by former manager Ruben Amorim.

Neville commented: "It was a very pragmatic and safe approach. We had already won the game, but Brentford looked very dangerous and created many chances, so we needed to neutralize that. To be fair, they managed to do that in the second half."

Neville emphasized that the Manchester United players were familiar with this formation from the beginning of the season, so they adapted quickly. He also suggested that fans understand why Carrick prioritized safety when the team was leading 2-0 but the game wasn't yet secure.

Since taking over in January, Carrick has primarily used a 4-2-3-1 formation. However, the adjustments made against Brentford showed he is willing to change tactics to achieve his goals.

MU are currently third and have virtually secured a Champions League spot. For Carrick, every win at this point would be a major plus in his long-term bid for his job at Old Trafford.
